The Substance

Coralie Fargeat's daring critique addresses the tyranny of women's appearance along with the feared consequences of ageing. Demi Moore offers a brilliant acting turn as Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to hosting a workout series on television. This Mystery Thriller

This Agatha Christie-esque story includes the talented actress as Laura, an ace reporter who takes a hiatus from covering global conflict to board a luxury cruise with a gravely sick Scandinavian billionaire and charitable figure, her husband, plus additional affluent guests. Yet once an enigmatic female disappears from the ship during the evening and the entire crew denies she ever existed, her journalistic curiosity kick in. Streaming currently, Netflix

Presence

Soderbergh tests his film-making abilities through this nifty ghostly tale shot entirely through the eyes of a ghost. When a household featuring mother Rebekah and troubled teenage daughter Chloe occupies their fresh home, the lens – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. Chloe seems aware of the ghostly being, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that doesn't outstay its welcome, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. Saturday 11 October, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Nicolas Cage's Meta Comedy

Cage fully commits to his unique fame in this meta comedy caper. He plays a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who takes on a million-dollar gig to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi Gutierrez. Recruited by the CIA to investigate the alleged criminal, Cage's unique performing skills proves useful. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone

The director's claustrophobic thriller remains effective without requiring a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has made the youth frightened. After Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and locked up in a cellar, he fears a terrible outcome. But the non-functional line on the wall continues to ring, with eerie communicators giving advice, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. An effective horror. This Saturday, 10.50pm, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the struggle between spirituality and money, the victory is clear for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky biopic regarding the shamed televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who states initially, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's a riot of bad interior design, overdone appearance and bad faith, yet Jessica Chastain manages to present Tammy Faye in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, the Film4 channel

The Spy Mystery

This week's another release by the same director presents a spy mystery as sharp as the polo necks sported by Michael Fassbender's UK spy. He is tasked to discover a double agent inside the organization from five suspects – including is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. The two stars are experts of deadpan cool, resulting in an engaging psychological game of truth or lie takes place. Additional actors join in the smart espionage amusement. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema
